Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries: Your Biannual Safety Check

November 3, 2025 · by johntarheel76

Twice a year, the rhythm of home life shifts with Daylight Saving Time. While you’re resetting your microwave and car clocks, there is one crucial task that can literally save lives: changing the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. A staggering number of home fire deaths occur in properties where smoke alarms are present but non-functional, primarily due to dead or missing batteries. Tying this essential safety measure to the time change—”spring forward, fall back”—is the easiest way to ensure your family is protected year-round, giving you a powerful, built-in reminder you won’t forget.

This simple, biannual check is about more than just switching out the old for the new; it’s a critical component of responsible homeownership. After replacing the batteries, take an extra moment to test each alarm by holding down the “test” button until it chirps loudly. For hardwired alarms with backup batteries, this check is just as important, as the backup is what protects you during a power outage. Furthermore, remember that most detectors have a lifespan and should be replaced entirely every 5-10 years (check the date on the back of the unit!). Taking these few extra minutes protects both your loved ones and your valuable real estate investment from the catastrophic damage a preventable fire can cause.
